Being proactive means thinking and acting ahead. Not only is it a great method for avoiding more work down later on, it can also be extremely important for averting problems. To be proactive, you need to start taking action, embracing your responsibility, and controlling your responses. Follow this guide for tips to help you stay ahead and have and a much more proactive outlook.

Positivity

The first step to being proactive is your headspace. The way we feel influences the way we think. Positive emotions boost our problem solving abilities as well as our judgment, decision-making, cognitive flexibility and creativity. Staying positive will help you to be better at solving all the little problems that are being thrown your way right now, such as figuring out new technology platforms for working and home schooling from home.

Think BIG!

There is a reason why the rear view mirror is smaller than the windshield: it's more important to know what lies ahead. It's important to consider your ultimate goals as there will always be little things to worry about, but don't get too lost in the short term problems as this could make you lose track of what you are really trying to accomplish.

Prioritise

Time management plays a critical role in becoming proactive. You need to ‘take time to make time’. When you realise that the time you sacrifice now on things like planning and building projects, sets you up for long term success. Everything comes with balance, by incorporating this in your work life and personal life you will feel much more organised and will be able to prioritise things better.

Plan

Proactive people plan for the future. Avoid the “here and now” thinking and instead, look ahead and anticipate long-term consequences. Bring the future into the present; what can you do today to ensure success tomorrow? Every decision you make is a link in a chain of events leading to one final conclusion. In order to make the best decision, you have to reflex on where you came from and where you’re planning in going.

The right people

Surrounding yourself with driven, effective people is a proven way to help you succeed. Proximity can be an excellent motivator. You have to choose between driven people and people who will drag you down. You cannot have both and except to succeed. You cannot spend time with lazy people all day and also achieve your daily goals, it will feel like quicksand. To remain positive and proactive, having the right people who think like you will motivate you to reach the end goal.

It is important to be dedicated to the process of becoming proactive. It is so easy to become distracted on a day to day basis with putting out fires. Yes, it’s true that some can be unavoidable however always remember to keep your core values and goals at the back of your mind so you can get one step closer to your long term goal.  Remember all of the work you put into being proactive will speak for itself.
